Casey and Babe are sisters who work in a department store and each year the store puts on a show. As expected, things are going wrong with every act until Casey comes out to help Babe with her song. They are a hit, but in the final act, Casey again comes out and this time the president sees her act and fires both her and Babe on the spot. Benny is able to book Casey, Babe and Dean into Vaudeville and their act is popular. But before they have their shot at stardom, Dean and Babe leave Casey and the act.

Bob Grove, a builder has problems with the council, over building supplies that he needs to complete a job on a local housing estate. Under pressure to finish the job, his son gets them from a local crook. Benny Armstrong was fired. The life he knew and future he had planned are now a haunting memory showing up in foggy daydreams and bowls of sugar coated cereal. With jobs scarce and cardboard plentiful, he takes to the streets to try his luck at "hand outs" after meeting Charles, a seemingly successful street dwelling scam artist. Trying to keep his job a secret from his loving but vacant mother is hard enough, but as he and Charles vie for the public's donations using every ploy in their arsenal they can muster from tap dancing to dog tricks, Benny begins to realize that his new cardboard life is just as full of hard knocks.
